Painting the Feeling of Skiing

Skiing is difficult to capture in a still image because the experience is defined by movement.

There is the shifting balance of a turn, the edge cutting into the snow, powder rising behind a skier and the mountain passing almost too quickly to study. The most memorable moments combine concentration, freedom and exhilaration.

My ski paintings attempt to hold onto that instant.

Rather than documenting every detail, I concentrate on the skier’s posture, the direction of movement and the relationship between the figure and the mountain. Loose, energetic brushwork suggests speed, while the surrounding snow and sky establish the scale of the alpine environment.

I want the viewer to feel the descent—not simply see a skier on a mountain.

Whistler, Blackcomb and British Columbia Ski Culture

My connection with Whistler and British Columbia’s mountains developed through more than 25 years of skiing, hiking and exploring the Sea-to-Sky region.

Whistler and Blackcomb offer far more than recognizable mountain scenery. They are connected with early starts, changing weather, deep-snow days, chairlift conversations and the excitement of discovering a new line.

Movement, Snow and Light in Oil Paint

Every ski painting begins with the movement of the skier.

I study the angle of the body, the position of the skis and the direction of the snow. Small changes in posture can determine whether a figure feels static or appears to be moving naturally through the mountain.

The composition is then developed in layers of oil paint. Cool whites, blues and violets create the winter atmosphere, while warmer colours add contrast and help the skier emerge from the landscape.

Snow is rarely painted as pure white. It reflects the sky, surrounding mountains, weather and changing light. Layering these colours gives the snow greater depth and allows it to feel luminous rather than flat.

Visible brushwork and textured paint suggest blowing snow, speed and the uneven surface of the mountain. Selected details bring the skier into focus, while looser passages preserve the energy of the moment.

The finished work combines recognizable skiing action with my own emotional interpretation of the experience.

Collected paintings remain visible because they document the development of my ski artwork and can provide inspiration for a future commission. A new painting may share a similar sense of movement, colour or mountain atmosphere, but another collector’s original will never be reproduced exactly.

About Canadian Ski Artist Graham Watts

I am a Canadian oil painter based in Vancouver, British Columbia, with a longstanding connection to Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky region.

As a skier and outdoor enthusiast, I draw on first-hand experience of the mountains, changing winter weather and the distinctive movement of a skier on snow.
