From the quiet intensity of a wolf’s gaze to the scale of Black Tusk and the reflections of a rain-soaked Vancouver street, Graham begins with moments that leave an emotional mark. Recognizable subjects meet expressive colour, bold contrast and textured oil paint to create work that feels familiar, vivid and personal.
From Guelph to the West Coast
Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Graham moved to British Columbia more than 25 years ago. The mountains, forests, ocean and wildlife soon became central to both his life and his work.
As a skier, hiker and watersports enthusiast, he spends time in the places he paints. A mountain view, the movement of a skier in deep snow, a wildlife encounter or the glow of city lights on wet pavement can all become the beginning of a painting.
That firsthand connection gives the work its sense of place. The subjects are unmistakably Canadian, but each painting is filtered through Graham’s own memory, optimism and emotional response.
A sculptor with a brush
Graham builds paintings gradually, using layers of colour, texture and glazing to search for the essential character of an animal or landscape. The aim is emotional truth, not photographic imitation.
Observe
Photographs, sketches and notes gathered outdoors capture light, movement, atmosphere and the memory of the encounter.
Build
Composition, contrast and layered oil colour establish the rhythm of the image and the physical presence of the subject.
Refine
Texture, glazing and selective detail bring clarity while preserving the energy and individuality of the painted surface.
Graham’s visual language is informed by the bold design and Canadian spirit of Lawren Harris, Emily Carr and E.J. Hughes, interpreted through a contemporary use of colour and cinematic light.

A practice built in public
Graham’s paintings have been exhibited in Vancouver, Whistler and communities throughout British Columbia. Showing the work in person creates something the studio cannot: the chance to hear the memories and emotions a painting brings forward for someone else.
