Painting the Mountains of British Columbia

British Columbia’s mountains have been part of my life and artistic inspiration for more than 25 years.

As a skier, hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I have spent years exploring Whistler, Blackcomb and the Sea-to-Sky corridor. Many of these paintings begin with a particular experience: changing light across a snow-covered ridge, the dramatic silhouette of Black Tusk or a distant view of the Tantalus Range while travelling between Vancouver and Whistler.

My goal is not to reproduce a mountain photograph exactly. I want to communicate how it feels to stand before the landscape—the scale, atmosphere, silence and sense of freedom that cannot always be captured by a camera.

Whistler, Blackcomb and Sea-to-Sky Landscapes

The Sea-to-Sky region contains some of British Columbia’s most recognizable and emotionally powerful mountain scenery.

Black Tusk rises above the landscape with an unmistakable silhouette. Whistler and Blackcomb are associated with skiing, adventure and time shared with family and friends. Fissile Peak, Overlord Mountain and the Tantalus Range offer quieter views shaped by distance, changing weather and alpine light.

Expressive Canadian Mountain Art

I work primarily in oil on canvas, building each mountain landscape through successive layers of colour, texture and light.

The process often begins outdoors with observation, photographs, sketches and notes. Back in the studio, I study the structure of the mountain, the direction of the light and the relationship between the foreground, sky and distant peaks.

Warm and cool colours are layered together to create depth. Blues, violets and cool whites suggest snow and distance, while warmer colour can bring energy and movement into the landscape. Visible brushwork and textured paint help the mountains feel physical rather than flat.

The finished paintings combine recognizable British Columbia scenery with my own emotional interpretation of the moment.
