Paintings that bring the spirit of Canada home.
I’m Graham Watts, a Canadian oil painter based in Vancouver, British Columbia. I creating original paintings inspired by Canadian wildlife, Whistler and Sea-to-Sky mountains, skiing and the the rain soaked streets ofVancouver.
For more than 15 years, Graham has developed a distinctive style built around expressive colour, sculptural texture and dramatic light. Every original is personally painted in oil on canvas and created to capture not simply what a place or subject looks like, but how it feels.

WHY I PAINT?
As an artist, one of my greatest joys comes from watching someone experience one of my paintings for the first time.
I originally painted the work because something moved me. Then a collector stands in front of it and has an emotional response of their own. It might be the subject, the colour, the texture, a memory of a place, or simply the realization that another person created every mark by hand.
For that moment, something I experienced privately becomes a shared experience.
That connection is deeply motivating to me.
When I paint, I want to make a statement, and colour helps me make it.
A photograph of a mountain captures a fraction of a second. Standing in front of that mountain is different. There is depth, changing light, atmosphere and scale. As the sun moves, rock faces emerge, crevices deepen and colours change.
I study those details carefully. For some mountain paintings, I use Google Earth and 3D modelling to explore the geometry of the peak from different perspectives before translating it back onto a two-dimensional canvas.
Then I push colour, texture and depth further not to overpower the subject, but to communicate something a photograph often cannot.
The same thing happens when I paint Vancouver.
On a wet night, the pavement can be filled with reflected headlights, brake lights, signs and saturated colour. Most people may walk straight past it. I want to make them stop and see it.
My paintings are not intended to be photographs.

MEET THE ARTIST
Originally from Guelph, Ontario, I have spent more than 25 years living, working and exploring British Columbia.
Wildlife, mountain peaks, Vancouver and Whistler cityscapes, and extreme skiing form the four recurring subjects of my work. I move between them depending on what captures my curiosity and pushes me creatively.
I began painting more than 20 years ago with a small canvas and three tubes of paint. What continues to fascinate me is how much the work keeps changing.
The way I paint today is very different from the way I painted five or ten years ago. That evolution matters to me. Every painting is another opportunity to study, experiment, push colour and texture further and find out what I’m capable of creating next.
Selling an original can therefore be surprisingly emotional. A painting represents a particular moment in my life and contains marks made physically by my own hand. When a collector chooses to live with one and perhaps one day passes it to another generation I find that incredibly special.
It also pushes me to make the next painting better
