My wildlife paintings begin with a simple belief: an animal should feel like an individual—not merely a symbol of the wilderness.

I am drawn to the quiet confidence of a grizzly bear, the intelligence in a wolf’s gaze, the clarity of an eagle and the stillness of a polar bear surrounded by light. I look for the expression, posture or moment that reveals something distinctive about the animal.

Rather than reproduce a photograph exactly, I use colour, contrast, texture and selective detail to create an emotional response. Expressive eyes often become the centre of the composition, while darker backgrounds allow the animal to emerge with greater intensity.

The result is recognizable wildlife art with a contemporary energy and a strong sense of presence.

Grizzly Bears, Wolves, Eagles and Canadian Wildlife

Bears have become an important part of my wildlife portfolio. Their combination of strength, curiosity and vulnerability offers endless possibilities for painting.

My grizzly bear paintings range from quiet, reflective portraits to bold compositions filled with luminous reds, oranges, blues and violets. Black bears, including the much-loved painting Bella, reveal a gentler and more playful personality.

Wolves offer a different kind of energy. Their alert expressions and watchful stillness suggest intelligence, loyalty and independence. Paintings such as Luminous Guardian use electric colour against a dark background to create a protective, almost spiritual presence.

Bald eagles, elk, polar bears and salmon expand the collection and help tell a broader story about Canada’s wildlife and natural environment.

Creating an Original Wildlife Painting

Each wildlife painting is created by hand in oil on canvas.

The process begins by studying the animal’s expression, anatomy, movement and character. I then develop the composition and establish the larger areas of light and shadow before gradually building colour, texture and detail.

Layers of warm and cool colour give the painting depth. Visible brushwork creates energy, while carefully rendered features—particularly the eyes, nose and surrounding fur—bring the animal’s personality into focus.

A large original painting can require many weeks and numerous layers of oil paint to complete. Every finished original carries the individual brushwork and surface texture that can only be experienced in a handcrafted painting.

Graham Watts is a Canadian oil painter based in Vancouver, British Columbia, with a longstanding connection to Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky region.
