An original painting is different from every other form of artwork I offer.

Each canvas is individually painted by hand. The brushwork, texture, colour choices and small adjustments that happen while I work cannot be duplicated exactly.

When an original painting is sold, that painting belongs to one collector.

That is part of what I love about original art.

It isn’t simply an image placed on a wall.

It is a physical object carrying the decisions and marks made while it was being created.

Wildlife has become an important part of my work.

My Canadian wildlife paintings include grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, eagles, elk and polar bears.

I am interested in more than simply reproducing the appearance of an animal.

The challenge is finding the expression, light, colour and presence that make the subject feel alive.

Some paintings are quiet.

Others are direct and powerful.

In either case, I want the animal to feel like an individual rather than simply a wildlife illustration.

British Columbia Landscape Paintings

British Columbia has shaped both my life and my work.

Mountains, changing weather, snow, water and dramatic light continue to provide an endless source of painting ideas.

My British Columbia landscape paintings include mountain scenes inspired by Whistler, Blackcomb, Black Tusk, the Tantalus Range and the wider Sea-to-Sky region.

Rather than painting every detail literally, I use colour, texture and light to try to preserve the feeling of being in the landscape.

Vancouver Paintings and Cityscapes

Vancouver creates a completely different kind of painting opportunity.

I am particularly interested in the city after rain.

Streetlights reflect across wet pavement. Cars, umbrellas and pedestrians create movement. Familiar architecture becomes transformed by evening light and West Coast weather.

My Vancouver paintings and cityscapes explore those moments throughout the city.

For collectors with a personal connection to Vancouver, these paintings often carry memories of a particular neighbourhood, street, landmark or period of their lives.

Whistler and Sea-to-Sky Paintings

My connection to Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky corridor goes back many years.

Skiing, hiking and spending time in these mountains has given me a personal relationship with the landscape rather than simply a photographic one.

Subjects have included Black Tusk, Whistler and Blackcomb, Overlord and Fissile, the Tantalus Range and ski scenes inspired by time spent in the mountains.

What Makes an Original Graham Watts Painting Different?

Every artist approaches painting differently.

My work begins with something recognizable—a bear, a mountain, a Vancouver street, a skier—but I am not trying to reproduce a photograph exactly.

I am looking for the emotional impression that made me want to paint the subject in the first place.

That may be:

• The focused gaze of a grizzly bear

• The scale of a mountain

• Warm light moving across snow

• Rain reflecting across a Vancouver street

• A skier disappearing into deep powder

• The quiet presence of a wolf or eagle

I use oil paint because it gives me the freedom to build colour gradually, create physical texture and return to the painting over multiple sessions.

Colour, Texture and Oil Paint

Colour plays a major role in my paintings.

I often exaggerate the relationship between warm and cool colour rather than trying to reproduce every colour exactly as it appeared in a photograph.

Snow may contain blue, violet, yellow or pink.

Brown fur may contain orange, red, violet and blue.

Rainy pavement can reflect almost every colour surrounding it.

Texture is equally important.

I use brushes, layered oil paint and palette knives to create physical changes across the surface of the canvas.

Those marks become part of the finished artwork and are one of the reasons an original painting feels very different in person from a digital image.

Can You Help Me See How a Painting Will Look in My Home?

Yes.

Choosing the right size can sometimes be more difficult than choosing the painting itself.

If you send me a photograph of the wall and approximate measurements, I can help you think through scale and placement.

A large painting can create a strong focal point, but bigger is not automatically better.

The right size depends on the wall, furniture, viewing distance and the role you want the artwork to play in the room.

What Happens When an Original Painting Is Sold?

When an original painting sells, it is removed from the available collection.

The original does not become available again.

In some cases, selected artwork may be offered separately as a signed limited edition, but that does not change the one-of-a-kind status of the original oil painting.

If a painting you love has already sold, another option is to discuss creating something new through an original art commission.

I do not reproduce sold originals as duplicate oil paintings, but we can explore a new composition inspired by a similar subject, location or feeling.

Original Painting

An original is the actual oil painting created by the artist.

There is only one.
